What is a flashback arrestor and a check valve?A check valve is essentially a one-way gate for gases, permitting flow in only one direction. It effectively prevents gases from reversing their course and flowing back upstream. However, it’s important to note that a check valve isn’t equipped to halt the reverse flow of ignited gases. When mixed gases catch fire, they create a phenomenon known as a flashback. A check valve alone cannot stop this flashback. This is where a flashback arrestor comes into play. It not only incorporates a check valve to prevent the reverse flow of gases but also features a flame barrier. This barrier is designed to extinguish any ignited gases (flashbacks) before they can reach the check valve. So, while a flashback arrestor does contain a check valve, the reverse isn’t true - a check valve does not have the additional components that make up a flashback arrestor. Please call our sales team for more information and prices on 02477 670780 or email sales@sentinel-gas.com
-
How often do I have to replace my flashback arrestors? The British Compressed Gases Association’s (BCGA) Code of Practice 7 (CP7 - the safe use of oxy-fuel gas equipment) and Code of Practice 47 (CP47 - The Safe Use of Individual Portable or Mobile Cylinder Gas Supply Equipment) recommend that regulators and flashback arrestors are checked annually, both visually and functionally, by a competent person (Sentinel Gas Systems Ltd can assist you with this by providing a Written Scheme of Examination). Furthermore, they should be replaced every five years, regardless of their condition. These checks need to be undertaken by a person who has sufficient practical experience of oxy-fuel gas equipment and theoretical knowledge of the functioning of the equipment, the properties of gases used, the potential defects and hazards that may occur and their importance to the integrity and safety of the equipment. Please ensure you comply with these guidelines to maintain the safety and efficiency of your gas systems. If you need further assistance, Sentinel Gas Systems Ltd can assist you with this by providing a Written Scheme of Examination offering CP7 and CP47 checks which can be conducted on your site.

Not all 6.0 grade gases are the sameWhen we say a gas is 6.0 grade, it means it has very few impurities - only about 1 part per million (ppm). But, this doesn’t tell us what those impurities are. Knowing what impurities are in the gas and how much of each is there is really important. This can affect how accurate your measurements are and can even prevent damage to your equipment. Even if two gases are both 6.0 grade, the types and amounts of impurities in them can be different. This can vary from one gas supplier to another. If you’re not sure which impurities matter for your work, don’t worry. Our technical staff are here to help you figure out the best gas for your needs. Please call Sales on 02477670780 or email sales@Sentinel-gas.com

Which impurities should I be cautious of in my ultra-high purity (UHP) gases?Different tests need different types of ultra-high purity (UHP) gases. Sometimes, oxygen and moisture can be unwanted impurities. For other tests, gases like hydrocarbons, CO, CO2, or others can affect how well your equipment works. Most equipment makers will tell you what kind of gases work best. Some will even tell you which impurities to avoid. But not all do. If you’re not sure and need advice, our expert team is here to help, please call sales on 02477 670780 or email sales@sentinel-gas.com.

Cylinder testing requirementsGas cylinders hold a lot of energy. They have to be made properly and checked regularly to make sure they’re safe for people to move, fill, and use. In the UK, there are laws about using gas cylinders to move gases by road. One of these laws is called The Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations. This law is part of an international agreement called ADR. ADR says that gas cylinders need to be checked and tested regularly. ADR requires that gas cylinders are inspected and tested on a periodic basis, please call Sentinel Gas Systems Ltd on 02477670780 for help and advice or email sales@sentinel-gas.com..

How do I work safely with compressed gas cylinders? Many businesses in the UK use compressed gases for various work tasks like soldering, welding, heating, cooking, putting out fires, and in labs. But, gas cylinders can be dangerous if not used properly. They can explode, cause fires, fall over or let out harmful gases. There are rules in the UK about how to handle, carry, and the storage of gas cylinders. It’s important to follow these rules and know how to work safely with gas cylinders. The rules cover ‘how to store’, ‘handle’, and ‘transport’ cylinders. Storing Gas Cylinders Store gas cylinders properly to avoid accidents. Use approved cages, allow only trained people access, label cylinders with warnings, and store in a well-ventilated area. Keep different types of gases separate, store unused and empty cylinders upright, away from heat sources, and keep LPG cylinders at least three metres away from others. Please call Sentinel Gas Systems Ltd, on 02477 670780 for training, help and advice. Handling Gas Cylinders Handle gas cylinders carefully to avoid accidents. Use cylinders filled by a trusted supplier, don’t fill one cylinder from another, wear PPE when filling (Please call Sentinel Gas Systems to purchase a PPE pack on 02477 670780), ensure good lighting in storage areas, and handle cylinders gently, carrying them close to your body. Remember Sentinel Gas Systems can change or move cylinders for you, please call Sentinel Gas Systems Ltd, on 02477 670780 for services, training help and advice. Transporting Gas Cylinders If possible, hire a professional company to transport cylinders. If not, secure cylinders in the vehicle, have a 2 kg fire extinguisher accessible, close all valves during transit, and use open or well-ventilated vehicles. Please call Sentinel Gas Systems Ltd, on 02477 670780 for help and advice.
